Chiropractic: Then & Now
Then
In September of 1895, the first chiropractic adjustment was performed by Dr. Daniel David Palmer. Palmer examined a janitor who had become deaf 17 years prior after he felt something “give” in his back. Palmer examined the area and gave a crude “adjustment” to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor, Harvey Lillard, then observed that his hearing improved.
From that first adjustment, DD Palmer continued to develop chiropractic and in 1897 established the Palmer School of Cure, known today as the Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa, where it remains today. Following the first adjustment, many people became interested in Palmer’s new science and healing art. Among his early students were Palmer’s son, Bartlett Joshua (BJ), as well as members of the older healing arts of medicine and osteopathy. The first state law licensing chiropractors was passed in 1913, and by 1931, 39 states had given chiropractors legal recognition.
Today, there are more than 70,000 active chiropractic licenses in the United States. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands officially recognize chiropractic as a health care profession. Many other countries also recognize and regulate chiropractic, including Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Australia, Japan and Switzerland.
Now
INSIGHT Millenium Technology – NASA Certified assessment technology that establishes a reliable, scientifically valid, quantitative representation of a person’s condition.
Surface Electromyography (sEMG) - This technology measures the motor nerve system and the effect subluxation has on your muscles. Two sensors will measure the surface electrical impulses along both sides of the spine. To summarize, it will let us know if your muscles are overworking or under active as a result of subluxation.
Thermal Reading - Heat is a byproduct of circulation, which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Autonomic nerves control blood vessels, but they also control organs and glands. This technology measures the heat differences from one level of the spine to another, as well as one side of the spine to the other. From this, we can see how subluxation may be affecting these functions of your nervous system. This non-invasive assessment is also 100% safe for kids and expecting mothers.
Something thought to be impossible, this now enables us to analyze our practice member’s condition more accurately, communicate more effectively – all while allowing our team and our practice member’s to track the progress of their nervous system.
Chiropractic Postural X-Rays
Everyone's health situation is different. X-rays may be taken during your first visit depending on age, presenting condition(s), and the results of the neurological assessment. Reasons we may choose not to take x-rays include pregnancy or young children. If you have outside imaging or x-rays from another provider, please bring it to your first visit so that the doctors' can review it. X-rays are a common part of the examination process and give us important information such as the specific misalignment of the spinal bones, detection of abnormal curvatures, determine if degeneration is present, or if you have any anatomical anomalies. Our low radiation X-rays give us an exact assessment of the spinal structure and is important when determining the right course of care for you!
Our Techniques
Dr. Natalie, Dr. Lauren and Dr. Amber utilize Principled Chiropractic Philosophy when determining which adjustment analysis and techniques to employ while performing the specific scientific adjustments tailored to each individual they care for.
MC2 Analysis: Simply put - it is a way of “asking the body” where an adjust is needed. Technically speaking, it’s a series of light pressure and pulsations placed on the vertebra to assess the appropriate contact point and direction to administer the adjustment. This analysis is what makes people think we have a magic touch, when in reality and in most cases, it’s just the most specific adjustment people have ever received.
